History and development of editing

History and development of editing from Lucasjwarren (Task 1)

This is a presentation I made to show the history and development of editing,
including:

  • Purposes of editing
  • How the very first filmmaker used editing
  • The first individuals to experiment with editing
  • The different types of editing techniques and principles used today
  • The development of digital editing technology and techniques.
This shows that I have researched relevant information about these subjects and showed my understanding of them in the powerpoint.

Cutting to soundtrack

(Task 2/3)

This video demonstrates the technique 'cutting to soundtrack', which is cutting each shot to the beat of the music. This was filmed and edited by me. This video shows that I have an understanding of the technique 'cutting to soundtrack', and that I know how it works.

The Crash

(Task 2/3)

This is a video I made with footage from 'Edit Sense', demonstrating editing techniques in a short video, showing that I know and understand the modern technology used to today, and how and when to use certain techniques and conventions.

In this video I used the techniques:

  • Establishing shot
  • Continuity of motion
  • Matching on action
  • Eye line matching
  • Cut away
In my opinion this edit went well as I think I clearly told a story which makes sense, and has decent continuity, plus I successfully managed to hide the stunt ramp for the car by cutting between shots (Happy with that!). A criticism would be that maybe the opening shots were a little to long which slowed down the video a little.

The Lift ABS: Commentary

(Task 2/3)

This is a commentary for my previous video 'The Lift ABS'. In this video I explain the editing techniques used for the video and how they helped the video. This shows  that I have an understanding of the techniques used and why I used them.

Editing Conventions

(Task 2/3)

This video demonstrates many of the editing conventions used in modern film making.

Logging Sheet For 'Editing Concepts' Video

(Task 2/3)

This is the logging sheet used to determine which clip to use, the shot number, the type of shot, the type and what techniques it will display. This would help the editor know what clips to use when editing the sequence together.

This shows that I can work at a profesional level and have understand the purpose and importance of a logging sheet.

Editing Conventions Storyboard

(Task 2/3)

This is the storyboard for the 'Editing Conventions' video.
Storyboarding is very important when creating a film, they help you to get all of your shots fast and efficiently, without delay, also if you are paying people by the hour to help you film, you will end up saving money in the long run.

This shows that I understand the importance and need for a storyboard in any production.
